Carnival in the Middle Ages

Medieval Carnival

When are Carnivals born?

This celebration has its origins in the Middle Ages like most of our traditions. It was during the 10th century, when the word carnelevare first appears  , which meant “to leave meat” in Italy, referring to the farewell to meat for the fasts of Lent.

There is no exact consensus about the start date of the Carnival celebration , what is known is that during the Middle Ages during the month of February people went out with their best costumes to celebrate. In the 7th century there was already talk of people who disguised themselves using clothes of the opposite sex and that food and drink were consumed without control.

How was it celebrated in the Medieval Era?

The explosion of the  carnival celebration  occurred in the 12th century, with the increase in population, especially in the cities. Meat and sex were the axes of the celebrations. Through uncontrolled drinking, beer and wine, in jugs that for our time would be considered gigantic, could hold up to a liter.

Since the year 1300, parades of women and men dressed in costumes and masks, singing satirical and ironic songs, have been common. Contests and hand-to-hand fights were common in Carnival celebrations and the nobles held tournaments and jousts. In Venice, bulls and wild boars were penned up in St. Mark’s Square and hunted with dogs. Knight jousting during these celebrations was very popular in Florence.
